Adobe Production Premium CS5Adobe Production Premium CS5 is the latest evolution of Adobe's software post-production solution available for both Mac and Windows®, and probably one of the most significant releases yet. Why? Because it's Adobe's first native 64-bit software, which in conjunction with a 64-bit operating system allows it to use as much RAM as you can afford for your computer.

This sort of change doesn't come along very often. The last time there was a big change, from 16-bit to 32-bit addressing, was over 20 years ago! Back then, the idea of a personal computer which might use the entire 32-bit address space (4GB), and more, was almost unthinkable, but that's where we are now. In fact we've been there for a little while, with Adobe's CS3 & CS4 offerings regularly hitting the "RAM limit" buffers, often with an undignified exit to the desktop and much user frustration. Now, with an "end-to-end" combination of 64-bit hardware, operating system and application software, our game-plan moves from the metaphorical restrictions of a 32-bit back yard into a super-size 64-bit stadium.

Adobe Production Premium CS5So what are the highlights of Production Premium CS5?

In Premiere Pro, the new 64-bit Mercury Playback Engine provides an increased number of real-time video layers and effects by using the GPU on a suitable graphics card (eg Quadro FX 3800/4800/5800 and most Nvidia 200/400 series). It virtually negates the need for a "real-time editing" card like those from Matrox, especially if your video acquisition is from a memory card and your final edit is destined for the web.

If you do need physical I/O, via SDI, HDMI or analogue, simpler devices such as the Matrox MXO2 or Blackmagic cards will suffice. Alongside the improved effects capability, more video compression formats are supported, including DV, HDV, RED, DPX; Sony XDCAM, XDCAM 50, XDCAM EX, and XDCAM HD; Panasonic P2 MXF, DVCPro HD, AVCHD & AVC-Intra; and Canon & Nikon DSLRs.  Adobe on the web

What we're about . . .      ZEN is not a traditional Audio-Visual dealer who started selling computers, nor is it a computer shop that also sells video editing systems. You won't get any salesmen giving you the "hard-sell" when you call, just straightforward advice and information - which for some callers is the knowledge that they don't need to buy whatever it is they thought they needed! Above all you'll be dealing with someone with a wide range of experience and knowledge of both PCs and video production. We're not the biggest, nor necessarily the cheapest, but we are one of the longest established computer/video specialists in the UK.

Company history . . .      ZEN was started in the 1980s by Martin Kay, then working for ITV at Granada's Manchester studios, who built his first 6502-based computer in 1979 from an Ohio Scientific kit, bought in the USA whilst working as a Sound Recordist on a film shoot for World In Action. With the advent of the Amiga, which could be gen-locked to a video source, Martin started writing a variety of video-related software. This included subtitling & tele-prompting, ident clocks, scoring software for sports & gameshows, and specialist software to mimic other computer displays for use in TV film dramas like Cracker, Prime Suspect and A Touch of Frost. Martin left Granada in 1993 to concentrate on his computer-video activities with ZEN, following a natural path into non-linear editing systems, now the main focus of the business, although he still maintains an active interest in video production.
